Rüdesheim and the Rhine Valley by Coach
Rüdesheim is the coach gateway to the Rhine Gorge. Plan around the river: boats run down the valley, but between Wiesbaden and Koblenz no bridge spans it.
The river decides the route
No bridge or tunnel crosses the Rhine on the roughly 90 km of river from Wiesbaden down to Koblenz. The right bank has Rüdesheim, Assmannshausen, St. Goarshausen and the Loreley. Across the water lie Bingen, Bacharach and St. Goar. Car ferries make the six-minute crossing to Bingen, but nobody has confirmed that they carry a full-size coach, so leave them out of the plan.
Driving to Bingen means going round by the bridges at Mainz and Wiesbaden: about 55 km, roughly 50 minutes. Bacharach is about 70 km the same way. A simpler pattern keeps the coach on the right bank: the group takes the boat down the valley, and the coach meets it at an agreed right-bank landing.

Coach parking in town
In town, coaches park at P4 Rheinhalle (Bleichstraße), P6 Auf der Lach, or P2 An der Ringmauer / Seilbahn, which is next to the cable-car station. There is coach space up at the monument too, so the coach can meet a group that rode the cable car up. In Assmannshausen, coaches park at Unter den Linden on the Rheinallee, the Platz von Juliénas by the station, and on the Höllenbergstraße.
No sticker is needed in Rüdesheim itself. Wiesbaden still has an active zone and wants a green sticker; Mainz dropped its zone in October 2025.

Coach rules in Rüdesheim am Rhein that change the plan
- Frankfurt Airport (FRA) is about 52 km by road from Rüdesheim, about 45 min in light traffic, by the A3 to the Wiesbadener Kreuz and then the A66 and B42.
- Rail: from 10 July to 11 December 2026 the right-bank Rhine line between Troisdorf and Wiesbaden, which serves Rüdesheim, is closed for renewal, with replacement buses calling at all stations. The tourist office suggests travelling on the left bank to Bingen and crossing by the Rhine ferry.
- Rüdesheim has no low-emission zone. The Mainz zone was lifted on 1 October 2025; Wiesbaden's zone is still active (green sticker required, also for foreign vehicles). Check before travel.
- Crossing the Rhine: two car ferries run between Rüdesheim and Bingen; the crossing takes about six minutes. No bridge or tunnel crosses the Rhine for about 90 river kilometres between Wiesbaden and Koblenz (a planned Mittelrheinbrücke is not expected before 2031), so left-bank places (Bingen, Bacharach, St. Goar) mean a ferry crossing or a long road detour. Check the ferry timetable, and that the ferry takes the coach, before planning.
- Coach parking in Rüdesheim: P2 "An der Ringmauer / Seilbahn" by the cable car to the Niederwalddenkmal, P4 "Rheinhalle" (Bleichstraße) and P6 "Auf der Lach". The car park at the Niederwalddenkmal itself also takes coaches.
- Coach parking in Assmannshausen: "Unter den Linden" (Rheinallee), "Platz von Juliénas" at the station (Rheinuferstraße) and Höllenbergstraße.
- The Rüdesheim tourist office has a group service that arranges boat trips, the cable car, wine tastings and guided tours for groups.
Filling the day
For groups, the tourist office can organise boat trips, wine tastings, guides and cable-car tickets. The taverns of the Drosselgasse are a short walk from the river. Kloster Eberbach in the Rheingau vineyards is about 20 minutes away, and Eltville about the same.
Further afield, the Marksburg at Braubach is just under an hour, and the Deutsches Eck in Koblenz about 1 h 10 min. Burg Eltz and Cochem on the Moselle are reached via Koblenz in about two hours each way, which makes a full day for one driver.
Questions organisers ask
How far is Frankfurt Airport?
Some 52 km. When traffic is light it takes about 45 minutes, via the A3, A66 and B42. Frankfurt city centre is about 50 minutes.
Will the coach take the ferry to Bingen?
Plan as if not, since no one has confirmed the ferries carry coaches. Take the road route through Mainz and Wiesbaden, or keep the day on the right bank.
Is the Loreley on the same side as Rüdesheim?
Yes. The Loreley plateau above St. Goarshausen is on the right bank, about 35 minutes by road.
