Leipzig Coach Hire: Stops, Parking and the Messe

Leipzig is a straightforward coach city once two points are settled. The coach needs a green sticker, and it cannot park inside the Promenadenring. Fix the set-down first and the rest of the day follows.

Sticker and zone

Leipzig's low-emission zone has applied since March 2011. It runs all day, every day, and takes in roughly 62 per cent of Leipzig's area. Only vehicles with a green sticker may drive in it, and that includes coaches registered abroad.

Leipzig plans to end the zone in its current form with the clean-air plan update due in 2027/2028; for now the current rule stands. Have the sticker confirmed on the quote and look at the city's page shortly before the trip.

Where the coach stops in the centre

Coaches may not park inside the inner-city ring. For the Thomaskirche, the Bach-Museum and the Markt, the coach uses one of four signed stops on the upper Dittrichring, on the west side of the church. The group gets off there and walks in. The one exception to the parking ban is a single coach space beside the Runde Ecke museum.

Once the group is off, the coach moves out. The nearest coach areas are on the east side of the Hauptbahnhof, reached from the Brandenburger Straße, with room for 10 and 31 coaches. There is more space on the Talstraße by the Johannisplatz. Tell everyone the pick-up stop before they leave their seats.

Coach rules in Leipzig that change the plan

  • Flughafen Leipzig/Halle (LEJ) is about 21 km by road from the Markt, about 25 min in light traffic. Berlin Brandenburg (BER) is about 191 km (about 2 h).
  • Trains arrive at Leipzig Hauptbahnhof on the north-east side of the inner-city ring, a short walk from the Markt. The long-distance coach terminal (Fernbus-Terminal) is on the east side of the station, on the Brandenburger Straße, with nine covered bays.
  • Leipzig has a low-emission zone (Umweltzone). It has applied since 1 March 2011, all day and every day, and covers about 62 per cent of the city area. Only vehicles with a green sticker (grüne Plakette) may drive in it, and foreign-registered vehicles need one too. The city says the zone will be lifted in its current form with the update of the clean-air plan in 2027/2028; until then the current rules apply. Check before travel.
  • Coaches may not park inside the inner-city ring (Promenadenring). The one exception is a coach space next to the "Runde Ecke" museum on the Dittrichring. There are four signed coach stops on the upper Dittrichring, on the west side of the Thomaskirche, for dropping off and picking up.
  • Coach parking near the centre: the coach area on the east side of the Hauptbahnhof (access from the Brandenburger Straße, Sachsenseite) with two areas for 10 and 31 coaches; the Talstraße by the Johannisplatz; and one space on the Goldschmidtstraße by the Mendelssohn-Haus.

  • Leipziger Buchmesse (book fair): 18 to 21 March 2027 at the Leipziger Messe, with "Leipzig liest" readings across the city; expect heavy demand for hotels and coach parking.

Tall coaches and bridges

A coach higher than 3.60 m has its own access map for the city centre, published by the tourist board together with a list of bridges limited by height or weight. Give the vehicle height when you ask for a quote so the route can be planned around them.

Sights outside the ring

Most sights beyond the ring have their own coach park: the Völkerschlachtdenkmal, some 5 km out to the south-east; the Zoo, on the Parthenstraße; the Panometer; and the Red Bull Arena at the Sportforum.

For a day out, Halle is about 40 minutes away, and Naumburg cathedral and the Bauhaus in Dessau are each just under an hour. Wittenberg takes about 1 h 10 min, Dresden and Weimar roughly an hour and a half. Berlin, about two hours each way, stretches one driver's hours.

Fair weeks

The Leipziger Messe lies about 8 km north of the Markt, with coach parking at the Neue Messe. The Leipziger Buchmesse (book fair) is on 18–21 March 2027, and readings spread across town. Hotels and coach parking go quickly that week, so book early.

Questions organisers ask

How long is the run in from Leipzig/Halle airport?

Roughly 21 km by road; with light traffic the drive takes about 25 minutes. BER is about 191 km away, around two hours by road, longer in a coach.

Can the coach stay by the Thomaskirche while we visit?

No. The four Dittrichring stops are only for boarding and alighting. The coach then parks at the Hauptbahnhof or another listed coach park and returns at the agreed time.
