Rothenburg by Coach: Parking Outside the Walls
In Rothenburg, day groups leave the coach outside the walls. Only hotel guests arriving or departing ride in, and only on a coach with a BusVignette. Plan the walk from the car park and the rest is simple.
Where day groups get off
Coaches without a BusVignette may not enter the old town. They stop at P1 (Friedrich-Hörner-Weg) or P3 (Schweinsdorfer Straße), two of the large car parks outside the walls; the group gets off and the coach stays. The third, P2 on the Nördlinger Straße, is limited to 7.5 t, which rules out a full-size coach. From the A7 between Würzburg and Ulm, take exit 108 Rothenburg/Tauber; the car parks are about 2 km on, and the walls a few minutes away on foot.
There is no low-emission zone.

Staying inside the walls
If the group sleeps in the old town, the coach company needs a BusVignette, issued for one year. It lets the coach drive only to the Schrannenplatz on the set route, with hotel guests on arrival and departure days. In the inner core the city no longer issues the permit to companies; the hotel applies instead. When the coach turns or backs up, hotel staff in high-visibility vests must guide it.
There is a height limit of 3.90 m in the old town. Coaches 3.70 m or higher pass the Galgentor only at walking pace and inside the white dashed lines. In the core, a night driving ban runs from 19:00 to 06:00, so plan the arrival before evening.

- Trains: Rothenburg station is on a branch line; travellers change at Steinach from Würzburg or Ansbach. The old town is within walking distance of the station.
- Rothenburg has no low-emission zone.
- Coaches may not enter the old town, except to bring hotel guests and their luggage on arrival and collect them on departure, and only with a BusVignette. Without it, coaches set down and park at the large car parks outside the walls.
- Coach parking: only on the large car parks (GroßraumParkplätze) outside the old town, which have direct access to the A7: P1 Friedrich-Hörner-Weg and P3 Schweinsdorfer Straße; P2 Nördlinger Straße takes vehicles only up to 7.5 t. From the A7 (Würzburg–Ulm) take exit 108 "Rothenburg/Tauber"; the car parks are about 2 km from the exit, a few minutes on foot from the walls.
- BusVignette: issued for one year to the coach company. It allows driving only to the Schrannenplatz on the set route, with hotel guests on arrival and departure days. For hotels in the inner core of the old town the company must contact the hotel, which applies for it; the city no longer issues permits for the inner core. Hotel staff in high-visibility vests must guide coaches when turning or reversing.
- The BusVignette is not valid on days when the old town is closed to traffic: during "Stadtmosphäre", Pentecost (Pfingsten), the Reichsstadttage and the Christmas market (20 November to 23 December 2026). Short-notice closures are possible; check just before travel.
- There is a general height limit of 3.90 m in the old town. Coaches 3.70 m high or more may pass through the Galgentor only at walking pace and only inside the white dashed lines. A night driving ban applies in the core of the old town from 19:00 to 06:00.
- Romantic Road: a scheduled "Romantic Road Coach" runs along the route every Sunday in both directions from early May to mid-September; a private coach tour can follow the same route from Würzburg to Füssen (about 460 km by the holiday route).
Closure days
On some days the old town shuts to traffic and the vignette counts for nothing: the Reichsstadttage, Pentecost, Stadtmosphäre and the Reiterlesmarkt Christmas market (20 November to 23 December 2026, with 22 November a closed day). Short-notice closures also happen, so check just before travel. On those days hotel guests walk in from the car parks too.
On the Romantic Road
Of all the places on the Romantische Straße, which runs 460 km between Würzburg and Füssen, Rothenburg is the name most people know. Heading north, the Residenz in Würzburg is some 50 minutes away; heading south, Dinkelsbühl takes around 40 and Nördlingen a little over an hour. A scheduled Romantic Road coach runs on Sundays from early May to mid-September, but a group with its own coach sets its own pace and stops.
By motorway, Füssen is about 2 h 25 min from Rothenburg. Nuremberg is about 1 h 15 min, Bamberg about 1 h 30 min and Heidelberg about 1 h 50 min.
Questions organisers ask
Which airport is nearest to Rothenburg?
Nuremberg Airport, about 82 km away and around 1 h 20 min in light traffic. Stuttgart (about 152 km) and Frankfurt (about 188 km) are further.
Can a day group be dropped at the Marktplatz?
No. A day group leaves the coach at P1 or P3 beyond the walls and enters on foot through a gate.
Can our coach bring us to a hotel inside the walls?
Yes, if the coach company holds a BusVignette and, for the inner core, the hotel has applied. Check the closure days first, when the vignette does not apply.
