Bremen Coach Hire: Old Town Stops and Bremerhaven

Bremen's old town lies inside a low-emission zone, and its coach stops are small and signposted. Work out the drop-off for the Marktplatz first, then where the coach waits.

Green sticker in the centre

Bremen's green-sticker area is wider than the old town: besides the Altstadt it reaches into the Östliche Vorstadt, Schwachhausen and much of the Neustadt south of the river. Entry needs a green sticker, and that applies to coaches and to vehicles from abroad as well. Exemptions can be applied for, but plan on the sticker. Signs mark the edges of the zone.

Set-down points by sight

For the Marktplatz, the Böttcherstraße and the Schnoor, the stop is the Wachtstraße, with four places between 08:00 and 20:00. For the Schlachte promenade, use the Martinistraße, which also suits the Altstadt. For the Hauptbahnhof and the Übersee-Museum, use the Breitenweg (six places) or the Hugo-Schauinsland-Platz (four). Four places fill fast on a busy day, so keep the stop short and the group ready at the door.

Parking is a separate step. The Bürgerweide behind the station is the large one: a paid car park outside the zone, by the Messe and the ÖVB-Arena. Smaller coach areas are on the Rembertiring and at Friedrich-Rauers-Straße / Breitenweg, and there is a free car park at the Neustadtsbahnhof. The city's coach plan is from 2022; the operator therefore checks current coach parks and road works with the city's traffic centre.

Coach rules in Bremen that change the plan

  • Bremen Airport (BRE) is about 4 km by road from the Marktplatz, about 10 min; tram line 6 links it with the Hauptbahnhof. Hamburg Airport (HAM) is about 125 km (about 1 h 35 min).
  • Trains arrive at Bremen Hauptbahnhof, on the north edge of the old town; the Messe, the ÖVB-Arena and the Bürgerweide are next to its north exit.
  • Bremen has a low-emission zone (Umweltzone) covering the Altstadt, the Östliche Vorstadt, parts of Schwachhausen and large parts of the Neustadt. Only vehicles with a green sticker may enter, coaches and foreign-registered vehicles included; exemptions can be applied for. The zone is signposted at its edges. Check before travel.
  • Coach drop-off (Bushalteplätze, signposted) in the tourist board's coach parking plan: Wachtstraße, 4 places (08:00 to 20:00), for the Altstadt, Böttcherstraße and Schnoor; Martinistraße, for the Altstadt and the Schlachte; Breitenweg (6 places) and Hugo-Schauinsland-Platz (4 places) for the Hauptbahnhof and the Übersee-Museum; Bürgermeister-Smidt-Straße 82 (1 place) for the Altstadt.
  • Coach parking in the same plan: the Bürgerweide, a large paid car park by the Messe, the ÖVB-Arena and the Hauptbahnhof (outside the low-emission zone; not always available during big events); Friedrich-Rauers-Straße / Breitenweg (10 spaces); Rembertiring (10 spaces); and the free car park at the Neustadtsbahnhof (9 to 15 spaces). The plan dates from 2022, and the city's traffic management centre (VMZ Bremen) shows the current coach parks and road works online.
  • The Freimarkt fills the Bürgerweide from 16 October to 1 November 2026; plan coach parking away from the Bürgerweide during the fair.
  • Bremerhaven: the coach terminal in the Havenwelten, on the Columbusstraße below the Columbus Center, has five covered bays where a coach may wait up to 10 minutes; it is signposted from the A27 exit 7 (Bremerhaven-Zentrum). Coaches then park free of charge on the Barkhausenstraße, about 900 m north, with room for up to 23 coaches. The city gives about 45 minutes from Bremen to Bremerhaven on the A27.

Freimarkt and event days

The Bürgerweide also hosts the Freimarkt, a funfair held since 1035, for more than two weeks from mid-October. During the fair, and on large Messe or arena evenings, the coach parks elsewhere. Werder Bremen home games fill the streets around the Weserstadion, east of the centre.

Bremerhaven and the coast

Bremerhaven is about 55 minutes by road. The coach terminal in the Havenwelten, on the Columbusstraße, is signposted from A27 exit 7, and a coach can stand at one of its five covered bays for up to 10 minutes. It then moves about 900 m north to the free coach parking on the Barkhausenstraße, which holds up to 23 coaches. The Klimahaus, the emigration museum and the maritime museum are all reached from the terminal.

Closer to home, Worpswede, Verden and Oldenburg are each well under an hour. Cuxhaven is about 1 h 10 min, and Hamburg and Hanover around 1 h 25 min each.
