Nuremberg Coach Hire for Groups
No coach enters Nuremberg's walled old town. Groups are set down at its edge, within about fifteen minutes' walk of the castle and the Hauptmarkt, so the plan starts with the right gate.
Three places at the edge of the old town
Vestnertorgraben has 15 coach spaces for up to two hours, with toilets. Spittlertorgraben has four spaces on the same terms. Grasersgasse is for setting down only, 15 minutes and no parking. Local signs win if works or events change things.
Augustinerstraße is closed to coaches by day. Only a coach carrying passengers with reduced mobility may enter, with a paid time-slot permit booked online, one for set-down and one for pick-up. Waiting for latecomers is not allowed. If several coaches travel together, put those passengers in one of them.

Low underpasses, no zone
Nuremberg has no low-emission zone and no diesel bans, so no sticker is needed. The catch is height: several railway underpasses are 4 m high or lower, and the operator plans a route that avoids them.
Airports for a group flying into Nuremberg
- Nuremberg Airport (NUE) — about 8 km by road to the Hauptmarkt, in the centre of Nürnberg, about 15 min in light traffic; longer at peak times

Coach rules in Nuremberg that change the plan
- Flughafen Nürnberg (NUE) is about 8 km by road from Hauptmarkt, about 15 min in light traffic; Flughafen München (MUC) is about 160 km (about 2 h). Journeys take longer at peak times.
- Nuremberg Airport: the multi-storey car parks have a maximum entry height of 2.10 m; for vehicles that are higher than 2.10 m or longer than 5 m the airport asks drivers to contact it in advance. U-Bahn U2 links the airport with Hauptbahnhof.
- Umweltzone: Nuremberg has no low-emission zone (Umweltzone), so no green sticker is needed to drive in the city. The city says all air-quality limit values are met and there are no diesel driving bans. Under the new EU air-quality directive the city is preparing an air-quality roadmap (Luftqualitätsfahrplan) with further measures by the end of 2028. These rules are current in October 2026; check them before travel.
- Coaches may not drive into the historic Altstadt; the medieval centre is narrow and has no space for coaches to set down. Official set-down and short-stay parking is at the edge of the old town, within about 15 minutes' walk of the main sights: Vestnertorgraben (south side, in the lay-bys, 15 coach parking spaces, up to 2 hours, paid automatic toilets), Spittlertorgraben (north-east side between Ludwigstor and Fürther Tor, 4 spaces, up to 2 hours) and Grasersgasse (west side at no. 10, 8 set-down places, up to 15 minutes, no parking). Changes at short notice are possible because of works or events; local signs apply.
- Augustinerstraße (entered through the Hallertor) is closed to coaches from 09:00 to 18:00. Only coaches carrying people with reduced mobility may enter, with a paid exception permit (§ 46 StVO) booked online as a time slot at busslots.nuernberg.de; set-down and pick-up each need their own permit, which must be shown to the guards. There are 4 places, up to 10 minutes; waiting for late passengers is not allowed. If several coaches travel together, passengers with reduced mobility should ride in one coach. The tourist board suggests waiting at the Vestnertorgraben, about 5 minutes away.
- Other set-down points (no parking): Bahnhofstraße in front of no. 11 next to the ZOB entrance (1 place, only for picking up guides, up to 15 minutes); Breslauer Straße north of the Franken-Center (4 places, up to 15 minutes); Liegnitzer Straße at P+R Langwasser Süd (2 places, up to 15 minutes). Tours that are not mainly about the old town (for example to the Dokumentationszentrum) use Grasersgasse or Vestnertorgraben for a short old-town visit; shuttles to the river-cruise port (Personenschifffahrtshafen) use only the Grasersgasse stop.
- Further official coach parking: Fürther Straße at the Justizgebäude (2 spaces, signed coach parking 09:00-18:00); Rothenburger Straße (U-Bahn) / Frankenschnellweg (2 spaces, free toilets); Frankenstraße north side east of Hiroshimaplatz (4 spaces) and west of Hiroshimaplatz (6 spaces); An der Ehrenhalle (3 spaces, 3 hours from 08:00 to 18:00; currently unusable because of works at the Kongresshalle); Schultheißallee east side north of Seminarweg (3 spaces, 3 hours from 08:00 to 18:00); Wöhrder Talübergang east side north of Wassertorstraße (6 spaces).
- Low railway underpasses: Celtisunterführung 3.60 m, Marientunnel 4.00 m, Allersberger Unterführung 3.90 m, Steinbühler Tunnel 3.60 m. Check the coach height before routing through them.
- Christkindlesmarkt (27 November to 24 December 2026): coaches are signposted to the edge of the old town, set down and pick up at the same place (P1 Vestnertorgraben or P2 Grasersgasse, with service staff), and park at the coach park on the Volksfestplatz, Bayernstraße 100. The ZOB is reserved for scheduled buses. The Augustinerstraße ban is extended to the whole day, and every entry, also before 09:00 and after 18:00, needs a permit from busslots.nuernberg.de.
- Bamberg (day trip): passengers may board and alight only at the coach stop on Mußstraße, where parking is not allowed; the only coach park is the Busparkplatz Margaretendamm. Lange Straße in the centre is closed to coaches. The tourist office recommends the A70 exit 14 "Bamberg-Hafen", also when coming from Nuremberg on the A73 (via the Bamberg interchange).
- Rothenburg ob der Tauber (day trip): signed coach parking is available around the old town; the Stadt Rothenburg ob der Tauber publishes the coach parking details (see the Rothenburg page).
- Nürnberg Hauptbahnhof: the main station, with ICE, IC and EC long-distance trains, regional trains, S-Bahn and U-Bahn (U1 to the Messe in 8 minutes, U2 to the airport); the ZOB for long-distance coaches is about 2 minutes away in the courtyard of the Adcom-Center, Bahnhofstraße corner of Käte-Strobel-Straße.
- Works: building works at the Kongresshalle restrict traffic at the Dokumentationszentrum, close the coach spaces on An der Ehrenhalle, and stop trams 6 and 8 from running through to Doku-Zentrum (replacement buses run). The Zeppelintribüne stays closed until about September 2028 and the Zeppelinfeld until about early 2031.
- Buses and coaches (Kraftomnibusse) are exempt from the German toll on motorways and federal roads, which applies only to goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes; the A3, A6, A9 and A73 are therefore toll-free for coaches, minibuses and cars carrying passengers.
- On German motorways a coach may drive at up to 100 km/h only if it is registered for that speed (entered in the registration certificate), has seat belts on all seats and a speed limiter set to 100 km/h; otherwise the limit is 80 km/h. The Sunday and public-holiday driving ban (StVO § 30) applies to lorries over 7.5 tonnes, not to coaches.
- EU drivers' hours rules (Regulation (EC) No 561/2006) apply to coach drivers: at most 9 hours of driving a day (10 hours twice a week), a 45-minute break after 4.5 hours of driving and at least 11 hours of daily rest.
History sites need booking
The Documentation Centre on the rally grounds reopened in full in May 2026. Groups of 10 or more register with the booking office, as there are no online group tickets, and it is not suitable for children under 14. The coach sets down in front, then parks on Schultheißallee. The Zeppelin tribune and field stay closed for safety works for years yet.
The Memorium Nuremberg Trials is closed on Tuesdays. Book group tours at least three weeks ahead and arrive by 17:30; Courtroom 600 is sometimes closed for events. At the castle the deep well is shown only on a guided tour.
Christmas market and Franconian days
The Christkindlesmarkt runs from 27 November to 24 December 2026. Coaches are signposted to Vestnertorgraben or Grasersgasse, where staff help, and then park on the Volksfestplatz. The Augustinerstraße permit is needed all day in that season, and the ZOB is for scheduled buses only.
Bamberg is about 1 hour 15: passengers get on and off only on Mußstraße and the coach parks at Margaretendamm. Rothenburg and Regensburg are about an hour and a half each, Munich about 2 hours 15.
Questions organisers ask
How does a coach handle Nuremberg Airport?
The airport is about 8 km from the Hauptmarkt. Its car parks take nothing over 2.10 m, so the coach contacts the airport ahead, and you and the operator settle the meeting point when booking.
How do coaches serve NürnbergMesse?
A guidance system directs vehicles to the Messe car parks. No coach rules are published for the halls, so the operator confirms the stop with the venue. U1 runs from the Hauptbahnhof in 8 minutes.
Can the coach stop at the Germanisches Nationalmuseum?
Yes. Coaches can set down and pick up directly at the museum, about 350 m from the Hauptbahnhof. It is closed on Mondays.
