Hamburg Airport coach transfers: two coach areas, one per terminal

Hamburg Airport sits only 11 km from the Rathaus and gives coaches signed areas near both terminals. A group coach has a proper place to stand, so most of the planning is about the right terminal and the drive that follows.

Reisebusse T1 and Reisebusse T2

Two signed coach areas, 'Reisebusse T1' and 'Reisebusse T2', serve the two terminals. The driver takes the area matching the terminal where the flight lands, guided by the car-park signs. At the barrier the driver presses the call button and gets a ticket if there is room. The stay is charged and paid before leaving.

There is no height limit on these areas. Operators who hold the airport's coach park card and register beforehand get one more option: a reserved zone on the arrivals level, right by the terminals. Whether your coach uses it depends on the partner operator, so ask at booking where the group will board.

Meeting the group

Hamburg publishes no group meeting point. Agree one with the driver before the day, for example a named exit or a call once the last bag is off the belt. Do not send the group to the bus stop at the airport hotel: it serves hotel guests only.

Where the coach meets the group

  • Coaches have two signed coach areas as close as possible to the terminals, for picking up or setting down guests: 'Reisebusse T1' and 'Reisebusse T2'; the driver chooses the one for the arrival terminal and follows the car-park guidance signs. The Terminal 2 coach area is reached by the 'Luftfracht' (air cargo) access road. Operators that register in advance and hold the airport's coach park card can also use the exclusive parking zone in front of the terminals on the arrivals level, reached by the 'Transfer Parken' lane. On the departures level, the right-hand lane leads to an exclusive stopping zone for taxis and VIP vehicles. The coach stop at the airport hotel is for hotel guests only. The airport publishes no group meeting point.

Coach parking and waiting

  • The coach areas have no height limit. To enter, the driver presses the call button and, if there is space, receives a ticket at the barrier; charges apply and must be paid before leaving, at the pay machines in car parks P2, P4 and P5 or on the 'Reisebusse T1' area. Regular operators can apply for a personal coach park card. The Kiss & Fly zone (middle lane on the departures level) is for cars: 10 minutes free, timed by number-plate recognition. Car parks P2, P4, P5 and P8-9 have a 2.00 m height limit.

By road to the city centre

  • about 11 km by road to the Rathaus, in the centre of Hamburg, about 20-25 min in light traffic; longer at peak times

Into Hamburg: no sticker needed

Expect 20 to 25 minutes to the Rathaus on clear roads. No sticker is needed anywhere in Hamburg: the city has no Umweltzone, and its last diesel bans ended in 2023.

The S1 to the Hauptbahnhof leaves every 10 minutes and takes about 25. There is no long-distance station at the airport; ICE journeys start at the Hauptbahnhof. A school class with rucksacks can manage the S-Bahn. A choir with instrument cases or a club with sports bags is better off on the coach.

Cruise days and the Baltic coast

Count on about an hour for the 92 km to the Ostseekai in Kiel, and about 55 minutes for the 70 km to Lübeck's Holstentor. A cruise group flying in on embarkation day needs margin: time for baggage, the walk to the coach area, the barrier, and traffic north of the city.

A tour that starts in Hamburg and runs along the coast for several days needs a driving plan. EU rules allow nine hours of driving a day, ten on two days a week, and the driver stops for 45 minutes after every four and a half hours behind the wheel.

Questions organisers ask

Which coach area will the driver use?

The one for the terminal where the flight arrives. Send the terminal with each flight number.

Is a green sticker needed in Hamburg?

Not for Hamburg itself, which has no Umweltzone. Onward trips into other cities may be different.

How long should we allow between landing and leaving?

Allow for passport control if you fly from outside Schengen, baggage reclaim and the walk. Then add a margin for the barrier and payment at the coach area.
