Potsdam by Coach: Sanssouci, Parking and Berlin

Potsdam has no low-emission zone and a published list of coach parks, so the driving is simple. What fixes the shape of the day is the admission time at Schloss Sanssouci.

Book the palace slot first

Schloss Sanssouci can only be visited at a set admission time, and the number of tickets each day is limited. Book the group through the palace foundation's group service well ahead, then plan the day backwards from that slot. The Historic Windmill visitor centre does sell same-day tickets, starting half an hour before the palace opens, but a coach group cannot count on them.

The palace is closed on Mondays. From April to October it opens 10:00 to 17:30, Tuesday to Sunday, and in November and December it closes at 16:30. Last admission is half an hour before closing. Several other palace buildings are shut for restoration, so check the foundation's site before promising anything beyond Sanssouci itself.

Where the coach parks

For Sanssouci, coaches use the paid car park P1 An der Historischen Mühle, next to the visitor centre at the Historic Windmill. The centre handles group tickets and has a meeting point for groups. If the visit starts at the Neues Palais end of the park, use the Am Neuen Palais coach park instead.

In all, the city lists nine tourist coach parks, from Bassinplatz and Am Lustgarten in the centre to Am Neuen Garten, and shows their live occupancy on its mobility site. Choose the one nearest the next sight rather than the hotel.

Coach rules in Potsdam that change the plan

  • Berlin Brandenburg airport (BER) is about 44 km by road from the Alter Markt, about 40 min in light traffic.
  • Trains arrive at Potsdam Hauptbahnhof, just south of the Alter Markt across the Havel; S-Bahn and regional trains link it with Berlin.
  • Potsdam has no low-emission zone (Umweltzone) on the Umweltbundesamt list. Berlin does: for day trips into central Berlin (inside the S-Bahn ring) a green sticker is required, also for foreign-registered vehicles. Check before travel.
  • The city lists nine tourist coach parks (Touristenbusparkplätze), with live occupancy on its mobility site: Am Neuen Garten, Am Neuen Palais, Am Lustgarten, Bassinplatz, Charlottenstraße, Großbeerenstraße, Jägertor, Rudolf-Breitscheid-Straße and Zur historischen Mühle.
  • Sanssouci: coaches park in the car park P1 "An der Historischen Mühle" (paid parking for cars and buses), beside the Visitor Centre at the Historic Windmill. The visitor centre sells tickets, handles group bookings and has a meeting point for groups. For the New Palace end of the park, the city lists a coach park "Am Neuen Palais".
  • Schloss Sanssouci is seen only at a fixed admission time. Tickets per day are limited, so the SPSG recommends buying them online in advance; same-day tickets are sold at the Historic Windmill visitor centre from 30 minutes before the palace opens. Groups book through the SPSG group service.
  • Schloss Sanssouci opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 17:30 from April to October and 10:00 to 16:30 in November and December; closed on Mondays and on 24 and 25 December; last admission 30 minutes before closing.
  • Closed for restoration in 2026: Schloss Cecilienhof (until further notice), the Orangery Palace, the Roman Baths and the King's Apartment in the New Palace. Check the SPSG site before promising a visit.

Inside the park

Park Sanssouci is large. Between April and October, a free shuttle bus uses the Ökonomieweg to connect the Grünes Gitter and the Neues Palais, which helps older walkers. Outside that season, allow real walking time between the palace and the far end, or move the coach between the two coach parks.

On into Berlin

Potsdam itself needs no sticker. Central Berlin does: inside the S-Bahn ring a green sticker is required, foreign coaches included. The Brandenburger Tor is about 35 km away, around 40 minutes in light traffic. The Sachsenhausen Memorial is just under an hour, and the Spreewald at Lübbenau about 1 h 15 min.

Bigger groups often sleep in Wannsee or south-west Berlin and treat Potsdam as a day visit. A Potsdam morning with a Berlin afternoon is a full day for one driver once traffic is added, so agree the finish time in advance.

Questions organisers ask

Which airport is closest to Potsdam?

Berlin Brandenburg (BER). It is some 44 km by road, about 40 minutes when traffic is light.

Can a group just turn up at Sanssouci?

Not reliably. Daily tickets are limited and visits run at fixed times, so book the group in advance through the palace foundation.

Does the coach need an environmental sticker?

Not for Potsdam, which has no low-emission zone. It does need one for central Berlin inside the S-Bahn ring.
