Hiring a Coach with Driver in Hamburg

Hamburg has no low-emission zone, so any coach may drive in. What shapes the day is the harbour: bridges under repair, set-down bays by the warehouses, and the piers where most visits begin.

No sticker, but watch the route

No green sticker is needed anywhere in Hamburg. The Altona diesel bans ended in September 2023, so every coach may use those streets again.

Roadworks matter more. The western Niederbaumbrücke at Baumwall is closed to buses until about 2028, so traffic uses the Brooksbrücke instead. The A7 and the Elbtunnel have had weekend closures, and more are possible. The Köhlbrandbrücke in the port also shuts on some weekends. Ask the operator to check closures in the week before the trip.

Set-down by the Speicherstadt

Am Sandtorkai is the main set-down point for the Speicherstadt, Miniatur Wunderland and the HafenCity. It is for getting on and off only, and the city added places there when the bridge closed. Longer waits go to Versmannstraße, or to Binnenhafenbrücke with a parking disc for up to three hours.

The Elbphilharmonie names no coach stop of its own; Sandtorkai and Baumwall are closest. From October 2026 the Plaza needs a ticket, and groups of 10 or more book group tickets online.

Airports for a group flying into Hamburg

  • Hamburg Airport (HAM) — about 11 km by road to the Rathaus, in the centre of Hamburg, about 20-25 min in light traffic; longer at peak times

Stadiums and arenas with coach access

  • Volksparkstadion — Hamburger SV football, in the Volkspark, Bahrenfeld; motorway exits HH-Volkspark or HH-Stellingen (A7). Coach park on Schnackenburgallee, about 200 m beyond the Braun car park; on match days shuttle buses run from S-Bahn Stellingen and Othmarschen
  • Barclays Arena — Indoor arena for concerts (up to 15,000) and handball and basketball (up to 13,000), Hellgrundweg 44, next to the Volksparkstadion. Formerly Color Line Arena, O2 World Hamburg and Barclaycard Arena. Coaches use the arena car parks reached from Hellgrundweg, which open about 2 hours before doors; Uwe-Seeler-Allee is closed on event days except to shuttle buses from S-Bahn Stellingen
  • Millerntor-Stadion — FC St. Pauli football, on the Heiligengeistfeld in St. Pauli, about 3 minutes from U-Bahn St. Pauli and Feldstraße (U3). Parking on the Heiligengeistfeld is not available during the Hamburger Dom fair (three times a year)
  • Sporthalle Hamburg — Indoor hall for concerts and sport at Krochmannstraße 55, Winterhude (formerly called Alsterdorfer Sporthalle), up to about 7,000 people

Coach rules in Hamburg that change the plan

  • Hamburg Airport (HAM) is about 11 km by road from Rathausmarkt, about 20-25 min in light traffic. Journeys take longer at peak times.
  • Hamburg Airport has two coach areas, "Reisebusse T1" and "Reisebusse T2", for setting down and picking up passengers near the terminals; there is no height limit on these areas. The driver presses the call button at the entry and receives a ticket at the barrier if space is free; payment is made before leaving at the pay machines in car parks P2, P4 and P5 or on the T1 coach area. The T2 coach area is reached through the "Luftfracht" (air cargo) access road. Coach operators with an airport coach card and advance registration may also use the "Transfer Parken" lane in front of the terminals on the arrivals level.
  • Hamburg has no Umweltzone, so no green sticker is needed to drive in the city. The street-level diesel through-traffic bans in Altona (on 580 m of Max-Brauer-Allee for diesel vehicles below Euro 6, and on about 1.6 km of Stresemannstraße for diesel lorries), in force since the end of May 2018, were lifted on 13 September 2023, so all diesel vehicles may use these streets again. These rules are current in October 2026; check them before travel.
  • The city traffic authority (Behörde für Verkehr und Mobilitätswende) publishes a list and map of coach parking and coach stops (Reisebusparkplätze) in the Geoportal Hamburg; most places are marked and signposted. The list says details can change, and Hamburg Tourismus updates its overview once a year, so roadworks and events may close places at short notice.
  • The Zentraler Omnibusbahnhof (ZOB Hamburg) at Adenauerallee 78, opposite the Hauptbahnhof, has 20 coach places that are paid and can be reserved by the hour or the day; operators register by e-mail with the ZOB form. In front of the Hauptbahnhof, Kirchenallee has 2 coach stops for up to 10 minutes, and Glockengießerwall at the Kunsthalle has 2 places for up to 3 hours with a parking disc.
  • Heiligengeistfeld (Glacischaussee, St. Pauli) has coach parking that can be reserved, including 3 coach places with a power connection; sleeping on board is allowed for at most 3 nights. The ground is often not available during the Hamburger Dom fair (spring, summer and winter) and other events.
  • Coach set-down places in the city centre and HafenCity include Am Sandtorkai 62-73 (14 coaches, set-down and pick-up only), Brooktorkaibrücke (1, set-down only), Mönkedamm 15-18 (1 coach, 09:00-20:00, up to 20 minutes), Ballindamm 22 (2, up to 10 minutes), Pumpen opposite no. 8 (1, up to 10 minutes) and Willy-Brandt-Straße 25 (2, set-down only). Coach parking is on Versmannstraße (9 coaches), Krayenkamp south of the Michel (10, parking disc 2 hours, 10:00-19:00) and Binnenhafenbrücke (4, parking disc up to 3 hours).
  • Since the western Niederbaumbrücke closed in February 2026, the city has provided six extra coach places on Am Sandtorkai and two at Baumwall. The eastern Niederbaumbrücke stays open in one direction only.
  • At the harbour and in St. Pauli, coaches park at the Landungsbrücken east of the Alter Elbtunnel (8 places, 7 with a paid parking ticket) and west of it (3, paid parking ticket), at Vorsetzen in front of the Überseebrücke (4), on Helgoländer Allee (12 plus 12) and on Zirkusweg at the Reeperbahn (4). At the Reeperbahn opposite the Operettenhaus there are 4 stops for up to 10 minutes; the Neue Flora theatre has 15 places on Holstenplatz for its musical guests only.
  • Near the Messe and Dammtor, coaches set down on Rentzelstraße at the Messe / Heinrich-Hertz-Turm (4 places) and on Theodor-Heuss-Platz opposite Dammtor station (3 places), both for set-down and pick-up only. On the Außenalster, Schöne Aussicht opposite Karlstraße has 4 places for coaches only from 08:00 to 19:00.
  • Coaches serving the Cruise Center HafenCity (Überseeboulevard 7, opened in spring 2025) must be registered in advance in the booking system of the Überseequartier shopping and leisure quarter next to the terminal. Hamburg's other cruise terminals are the Cruise Center Altona and the Cruise Center Steinwerder (south of the Elbe).
  • In Lübeck, a common day trip, coaches park at the Musik- und Kongresshalle (Willy-Brandt-Allee), at the Hansehalle and at the Europäisches Hansemuseum, with Gustav-Radbruch-Platz as overflow. Set-down and pick-up are allowed at Gustav-Radbruch-Platz, on Untertrave at Braunstraße by the boat landing, on Wallstraße and at Schüsselbuden.
  • Hamburg Hauptbahnhof: the main station, with ICE and IC trains from Berlin, Hannover, Bremen, Frankfurt, Cologne, Munich and Copenhagen; the ZOB is opposite.
  • Hamburg Dammtor: ICE and IC stop next to the CCH, the Messe and the university.
  • Hamburg-Altona: terminus for some ICE and IC trains in the west of the city. Long-distance and regional trains are due to move to a new station at Diebsteich at the December 2029 timetable change; the old Altona station will then stay an S-Bahn station.
  • Hamburg-Harburg: ICE, IC and regional trains south of the Elbe, towards Hannover, Bremen and Cuxhaven.
  • The A7 through Hamburg, including the Elbtunnel, had eight weekend full closures in 2026 (the last one from 25 to 28 September 2026) for the Altona noise-protection tunnel, the K20 Hochstraße Elbmarsch and a new tunnel control centre; the K20 works south of the Elbtunnel are due to finish in autumn 2026. More closures are possible as the A7 works continue; check autobahn.de before travel.
  • The Köhlbrandbrücke in the port is closed to all traffic on some weekends for repairs (one more full closure was announced for October 2026 and seven for April to October 2027), and since May 2026 special heavy transports over 44 tonnes may not use it.
  • Buses and coaches (Kraftomnibusse) are exempt from the German toll on motorways and federal roads, which applies only to goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes; the A1, the A7 with the Elbtunnel, the A23 and the A24 are therefore toll-free for coaches, minibuses and cars carrying passengers.
  • On German motorways a coach may drive at up to 100 km/h only if it is registered for that speed (entered in the registration certificate), has seat belts on all seats and a speed limiter set to 100 km/h; otherwise the limit is 80 km/h. The Sunday and public-holiday driving ban (StVO § 30) applies to lorries over 7.5 tonnes, not to coaches.
  • EU drivers' hours rules (Regulation (EC) No 561/2006) apply to coach drivers: at most 9 hours of driving a day (10 hours twice a week), a 45-minute break after 4.5 hours of driving and at least 11 hours of daily rest.

Harbour, Michel and Rathaus

At the Landungsbrücken, coach places sit on both sides of the Alter Elbtunnel, with more on Helgoländer Allee. The Michel runs tours for up to 25 people; book about two weeks ahead and park on Krayenkamp. Rathaus group tours take up to 30 and can be requested no earlier than 60 days before. Luggage is not allowed inside.

Miniatur Wunderland wants groups of 15 or more registered online. At weekends and in school holidays the group slots fall early in the morning or late in the afternoon, so build the day around that slot.

Lübeck, Lüneburg and Schwerin

Lübeck is about an hour away. Coaches park at the Musik- und Kongresshalle and set down at Gustav-Radbruch-Platz or by the boat landing on Untertrave. Lüneburg is under an hour, Schwerin about 1 hour 45. Warnemünde is two and a half hours each way, which makes the drivers' hours worth checking.

Questions organisers ask

Where do coaches stop at Hamburg Airport?

In two coach areas, Reisebusse T1 and Reisebusse T2, near the terminals. The driver takes a ticket at the barrier and pays before leaving. The airport is about 11 km from Rathausmarkt.

Can a coach be parked by the hour near the Hauptbahnhof?

Yes. The ZOB on Adenauerallee, opposite the station, has paid coach places that can be reserved by the hour or the day.

May the driver sleep on board?

On the Heiligengeistfeld, for up to three nights, and some places there have power. The ground is often unavailable while the Hamburger Dom fair is on.

Which cruise terminal will we use?

The terminal named on the cruise documents. A coach serving the HafenCity terminal must be registered in advance, which the operator arranges.
