Day trips by coach

A coach day trip works or fails on three things: where the coach may stop, how long the driver may drive, and whether timed tickets fit the timetable.

Old towns: set down at the edge

Many old towns are closed to coaches. In Nürnberg, the coach stops at Vestnertorgraben, Grasersgasse or Spittlertorgraben, within about 15 minutes' walk of the main sights. In Rothenburg ob der Tauber, day visitors leave the coach at the large car parks outside the walls. In Köln, the stop is Gereonstraße, not the Dom, for 15 minutes at most with the engine off.

Build the walk into the plan. Fifty people take longer to get off a coach and cross a busy square than anyone expects.

Neuschwanstein and the long days

Neuschwanstein from München is about 260 km there and back. The Zugspitze and back is about 200 km, plus the time on the mountain. Both fit one driver's day, but with little slack: 9 hours of driving at most and a 45-minute stop after four and a half hours.

At Hohenschwangau, coaches may use only car parks P1 and P4, and cannot drop off at the ticket centre. There is no ticket sale up at the castle: groups buy online or at the ticket centre, and the day's tickets go fast. Buy them well ahead for a group, and be in Hohenschwangau 1.5 to 2 hours before the entry time.

Rules the organiser should know

  • Germany had 35 low-emission zones (Umweltzonen) at the end of 2025, according to the Umweltbundesamt; many cities have lifted their zones, so check each city before travel
  • In ice, snow or slush every motor vehicle must have winter tyres (situational winter-tyre rule, § 2 Abs. 3a StVO); there is no fixed winter-tyre date
  • Nürnberg's medieval Old Town has coach stops and short-term coach places on its edge at Vestnertorgraben, Grasersgasse and Spittlertorgraben, within about 15 minutes' walk of the main sights

Stickers, tyres and Sundays

In an Umweltzone the green sticker is compulsory, also for coaches registered abroad. One sticker is valid in every German zone. Several cities have lifted their zones, so check each city on the route rather than assuming.

Winter tyres depend on the road, not the date: they are required in ice, snow or slush. Alpine trips in winter should allow for that. Sundays and holidays are open to coaches, as the lorry ban does not apply.

Questions organisers ask

Can we visit the left bank of the Rhine from Rüdesheim?

Places such as Bacharach or St. Goar need a ferry or a long detour. Whether a ferry takes a full-size coach must be checked, so do not plan on it.

How fast does a coach drive on the motorway?

Up to 100 km/h if it is approved and equipped for it, otherwise up to 80 km/h. Drive times are planned on that basis.

Can we stop for lunch on the way?

Yes, if the place has room for a coach. Tell us where you plan to eat and the operator checks the access.
