Coaches for sports teams and club trips

Teams travel with kit, a fixed kick-off and often a few supporters. Plan the coach backwards from the time the squad must be in the changing room.

Pick the size, and the licence follows

A squad of fifteen with staff may fit a minibus. Add supporters and a midi-coach or a full-size coach is simpler. The licence depends on the size. Category D1 covers up to 16 passengers and vehicles up to 8 m long. Anything bigger needs category D. The partner operator sends a driver with the right category.

Kit takes room. A full-size coach has underfloor holds. In a minibus, the rear luggage space shrinks when every seat is taken, so list kit bags, physio tables and anything long.

Away weekends and tournaments

For a tournament or an away weekend run as one occasional trip, the driver may delay the weekly rest by as much as 12 days. Since 2024 this also covers trips that stay inside Germany. The daily driving limits still apply.

Buses pay no German HGV toll and are outside the Sunday lorry ban. A Sunday fixture is no problem for the coach.

Rules the organiser should know

  • Category D covers vehicles built to carry more than eight passengers besides the driver; D1 covers vehicles for up to 16 passengers and up to 8 m long
  • Buses are exempt from the German HGV toll (Lkw-Maut)

Stadium parking on match day

Grounds set their own coach rules. At Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt, coaches park on Parkplatz PC (Gleisdreieck) with a ticket booked in advance. At the Berlin Olympiastadion, the coach spaces on Flatowallee and Hanns-Braun-Straße can be used only when no event or fair shuttle needs them. For an away game, ask the home club where the visiting coach goes.

Running clubs heading for the GENERALI BERLIN-MARATHON on Sunday 26 September 2027 should expect closed roads around Straße des 17. Juni, where the race starts and finishes. Set down well away from it.

Questions organisers ask

Can supporters ride on the team coach?

Yes, if there are seats. Everyone wears a seat belt where one is fitted, players and fans alike.

What if the match goes to extra time?

Tell us the latest likely finish. The return is planned around it, within the driver's hours.

Does the coach need a sticker for away games?

In any Umweltzone it needs the green sticker, for example in Berlin, München or Köln. The operator checks this against the route.
