Hiring a Coach and Driver in Munich
In Munich the question is never where to park in the old town. Coaches cannot. It is which set-down zone on the Altstadtring suits the first stop, and where the coach waits after that.
Two rules about the engine
Munich's low-emission zone includes the Mittlerer Ring itself and everything inside it. A green sticker is required, for visitors and foreign coaches too. On top of that, a Euro 4/IV diesel or anything older may not enter the zone, sticker or not. That ban applies until further notice, and there is no general exemption for tour coaches.
A Euro 5 or newer diesel is fine. Ask for the emission class on the quote and you will not meet a problem at the ring.

Twenty minutes on the Altstadtring
The city has five set-down zones around the old town. Frauenstraße near the Isartor suits Marienplatz, the Viktualienmarkt and the Hofbräuhaus. Maximiliansplatz is closest to the Frauenkirche and is for boarding and alighting only. Most zones allow up to 20 minutes, so have the group ready at the kerb before the coach pulls in.
After that the coach leaves. The central coach park is on Hansastraße near U-Bahn Heimeranplatz; a smaller one by the Deutsches Museum on Erhardtstraße serves the museum. The paid places on the west side of Karl-Scharnagl-Ring allow up to two hours.

Coach rules in Munich that change the plan
- Flughafen München (MUC) is about 39 km by road from Marienplatz, about 40 min in light traffic; Memmingen Airport (FMM) is about 116 km (about 1.75 h). Journeys take longer at peak times.
- Umweltzone: Munich has an active low-emission zone. It covers the Mittlerer Ring (B2R) itself and everything inside it. Only vehicles with a green sticker (grüne Plakette) may drive in it, and visitors and tourists also need the sticker, so foreign coaches and minibuses need one too.
- Diesel ban in the Umweltzone: since 1 February 2023 diesel vehicles of emission standard Euro 4/IV or older may not drive in the zone (including the Mittlerer Ring), even with a green sticker; diesel vehicles from Euro 5/V, petrol and other drives are allowed with a green sticker. Delivery traffic and residents are exempt by signage, and the city exempts scheduled services going to and from the ZOB, but there is no general exemption for tour coaches; individual exemptions can be requested from the Kreisverwaltungsreferat. The planned Euro 5 stage was not introduced. On Landshuter Allee (part of the Mittlerer Ring) a 30 km/h limit applies again from 25 February 2026 after a court decision. These rules are current in October 2026; check them before travel.
- Coaches cannot park in the old town. Five official set-down and pick-up zones (An- und Abfahrtszonen) are on the Altstadtring, all inside the Umweltzone: Frauenstraße 19 between Isartor and Frauenstraße (3 places, up to 20 minutes, 07:00-23:00); Blumenstraße 26-28a between Corneliusstraße and An der Hauptfeuerwache (5 coaches, up to 20 minutes, 08:00-18:00 Monday to Saturday); Karl-Scharnagl-Ring 10, east side, between Christophstraße and Seitzstraße (4 coaches, up to 20 minutes, 07:00-22:00); Karl-Scharnagl-Ring 5, west side, between Hofgartenstraße and Herzog-Rudolf-Straße (about 8 places, paid, up to 2 hours, 07:00-22:00); Maximiliansplatz 23 between Pacellistraße and Prannerstraße (7 coaches, up to 20 minutes, 07:00-23:00, for boarding and alighting only).
- Official coach parks (Busparkplätze) listed by the Landeshauptstadt München: Hansastraße 51, near the Mittlerer Ring West (about 40 spaces, paid, inside the Umweltzone, the central coach park for the city centre, with U-Bahn Heimeranplatz nearby); Erhardtstraße 38 at the Deutsches Museum (15 spaces, paid, inside the Umweltzone); Spiridon-Louis-Ring 3 at the Olympiapark (30 spaces, paid, possible restrictions during large events).
- Two city coach terminals lie outside the Umweltzone, both next to the motorway and on the U-Bahn: Busterminal Fröttmaning, Werner-Heisenberg-Allee 21 (18 stops, 36 coach parking spaces, staff on site 24 hours, U6; A9 exit Fröttmaning-Süd or A99 exit Fröttmaning-Nord) and Busterminal Messestadt Ost, Willy-Brandt-Allee 11 (12 stops, 3 coach parking spaces, U2; A94 exit Feldkirchen-West). Stops are limited to 30 minutes. Coach parking there can be used without registration, but registration is strongly recommended, especially at Messestadt Ost; register at least 24 hours ahead, and by Thursday 15:00 for arrivals from Saturday to Monday. Drivers pay on site.
- The ZOB (Zentraler Omnibusbahnhof) at Hackerbrücke, Arnulfstraße 21, is the hub for scheduled long-distance coaches; München Tourismus notes its coach parking is mostly occupied.
- Oktoberfest: coaches may not enter the closed ring around the Theresienwiese (Lindwurmstraße, Poccistraße, Hans-Fischer-Straße, Radlkoferstraße, Pfeuferstraße, Ganghoferstraße, Ridlerstraße, Trappentreustraße, Landsberger Straße, Bayerstraße, Martin-Greif-Straße, Schwanthalerstraße, Paul-Heyse-Straße, Kaiser-Ludwig-Platz, Herzog-Heinrich-Straße), and setting down or picking up around the grounds is not allowed; police do not tolerate coaches there. München Tourismus lists coach parks for the Oktoberfest at Messegelände Riem (De-Gasperi-Bogen, Tor 9, then U2 and U4/U5, about 20 minutes), Tübinger Straße between Westendstraße and Garmischer Straße near Heimeranplatz (30 coaches, 5 fewer on weekdays, then U4/U5, about 5 minutes), the Viehhof at Zenettistraße 11 (about 15 minutes on foot) and near Ostbahnhof at Grafinger Straße 27A (about 4 coach spaces).
- KZ-Gedenkstätte Dachau: coach parking is next to the memorial at Alte Römerstraße 73, 85221 Dachau (paid, cash only, sometimes full in summer). From Munich: A9, A99 to the Feldmoching interchange, A92 to the Oberschleißheim/Dachau exit, then B471 to the Dachau-Ost exit; the memorial is signposted. Only guides licensed by the memorial may lead tours on site.
- Schloss Nymphenburg has 8 coach spaces at the palace for visitors to the museums and the park.
- München Hauptbahnhof: the main station, a terminus for long-distance and regional trains with the S-Bahn trunk line and U-Bahn U1, U2, U4 and U5; the station has been under reconstruction since 2019 and the old ticket hall has been demolished for the new building and the deep station of the 2nd S-Bahn trunk line. The ZOB for scheduled coaches is nearby at Hackerbrücke.
- München Ost (Ostbahnhof): through station in Haidhausen for long-distance and regional trains, S-Bahn and U5, and the terminal for car-carrying trains (Autoreisezug).
- München-Pasing: long-distance station in the west of the city (S-Bahn stop Pasing), with about 1,000 trains a day.
- Works: the 2nd S-Bahn trunk line (2. Stammstrecke) is being built between Laim and Leuchtenbergring, with a tunnel between Hauptbahnhof and Ostbahnhof and new deep stations at Hauptbahnhof, Marienhof and Ostbahnhof; tunnel boring started in autumn 2026 at the western portal near the Donnersbergerbrücke. S-Bahn trains do not stop at Laim from 25 August 2026 until about mid-2028. The Olympiastadion is closed for renovation (since September 2025, about 2 to 3 years).
- Germany has a situational winter-tyre rule (StVO § 2 (3a)): in black ice, snow-covered roads, slush, or icy or frosty roads, a vehicle may be driven only on winter tyres. For buses and coaches (classes M2 and M3) the rule applies to the tyres on the permanently driven axles and the front steering axles. Alpine day trips (Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Linderhof, Berchtesgaden) use mountain roads where these conditions are common in winter.
- Day trips to Salzburg and Innsbruck use Austrian motorways and expressways, where every vehicle over 3.5 tonnes, including coaches, pays a distance-based toll (GO-Maut) with a GO-Box on board; check the rules before travel.
- Buses and coaches (Kraftomnibusse) are exempt from the German toll on motorways and federal roads, which applies only to goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes; the A99 ring motorway and the A8, A9, A92, A95 and A96 are therefore toll-free for coaches, minibuses and cars carrying passengers.
- On German motorways a coach may drive at up to 100 km/h only if it is registered for that speed (entered in the registration certificate), has seat belts on all seats and a speed limiter set to 100 km/h; otherwise the limit is 80 km/h. The Sunday and public-holiday driving ban (StVO § 30) applies to lorries over 7.5 tonnes, not to coaches.
- EU drivers' hours rules (Regulation (EC) No 561/2006) apply to coach drivers: at most 9 hours of driving a day (10 hours twice a week), a 45-minute break after 4.5 hours of driving and at least 11 hours of daily rest.
Palaces, museums and stadiums
The Residenz and Schloss Nymphenburg both cap groups at 25, so a coach of 50 needs two guides. The Residenz needs no group reservation, and both close on Shrove Tuesday. Nymphenburg has eight coach spaces at the palace itself. BMW Welt tours usually take up to 20 people and must be booked; the coach park on Spiridon-Louis-Ring serves it and the Olympiapark, where the stadium is closed for renovation.
For the Messe, the Busterminal Messestadt Ost lies outside the zone. Registration is strongly advised: at least 24 hours ahead, and by Thursday 15:00 for arrivals from Saturday to Monday. For the Allianz Arena the operator confirms the stopping point.
Dachau, the lakes and the Alps
Dachau is about 50 minutes away. Guided tours take at most 30 people aged 13 or over and are booked months ahead; coach parking beside the site is paid in cash. Tegernsee and Andechs are about an hour each.
Neuschwanstein is about two hours each way, and tickets should be bought well ahead. That is a long day, so the driver's breaks shape the timetable. In ice or snow, Germany requires winter tyres, and the Alpine roads see those conditions often.
Questions organisers ask
How far is the airport?
Munich Airport is about 39 km from Marienplatz, around 40 minutes in light traffic and longer at peak times.
Can a coach drop us at the Oktoberfest?
No. Coaches may not enter the closed ring around the Theresienwiese or set down beside it. Groups use the city's designated coach sites and continue by U-Bahn. The sites are set each year and confirmed when you book.
Can we meet the coach at the Hauptbahnhof?
The station is being rebuilt, and the coach parking at the nearby ZOB is usually full. Agree a meeting point with the operator in advance instead.
