Heidelberg by Coach: Old Town and Castle

Heidelberg's old town lies in a narrow valley between the Neckar and the castle hill. A coach drops the group at one official point, leaves, and returns at an agreed time. The castle road needs its own booking.

Neckarmünzplatz, then away

The Neckarmünzplatz, by the Tourist Information, is the official set-down and pick-up point. A strict no-stopping rule applies apart from a short set-down, and coaches that wait may be towed. Guides for coach groups usually meet there too.

The coach then has two choices. The Karlstor coach park is about 300 m away with room for 12, but it cannot be reserved and is often full. The Bahnstadt coach park on Speyerer Straße holds 35, can be booked ahead and is about 12 minutes' drive away. For a full day, book the Bahnstadt.

Getting a coach up to the castle

The castle coach park on Elisabethenweg takes six coaches up to 14.50 m long. Driving up is allowed only with a paid reservation, which doubles as the access permit, and never between 19:00 and 08:00. It is about 500 m from the castle. Without a reservation the group takes the Bergbahn from Kornmarkt or walks up the Burgweg.

Access roads change with repairs below the castle, so check the coach route when booking. The Bergbahn itself closes from 4 October 2027 to 7 April 2028, with a replacement bus. Inside, the rooms are shown only on a 60-minute guided tour.

Coach rules in Heidelberg that change the plan

  • Flughafen Frankfurt (FRA) is about 84 km by road from Universitätsplatz in the Altstadt, about 1.25 h by coach in light traffic; Flughafen Stuttgart (STR) is about 128 km (about 1.75 h). Journeys take longer at peak times.
  • Heidelberg no longer has an Umweltzone. The Regierungspräsidium Karlsruhe lifted it on 1 March 2023 because the nitrogen dioxide limit had been met since 2017; it had covered the Altstadt, Bergheim, Handschuhsheim, Neuenheim, Rohrbach, the Südstadt and the Weststadt. No sticker is needed to drive in Heidelberg, and no diesel driving ban applies. These rules are current in October 2026; check them before travel.
  • The Neckarmünzplatz, with the Tourist Information in the heart of the Altstadt, is the official set-down and pick-up point for coaches. There is a strict no-stopping rule except for passengers getting on and off, for at most 10 minutes; the coach must then leave, and no parking is allowed there. Coaches that break this rule may be towed away.
  • Busparkplatz Karlstor/Altstadt: Schlierbacher Landstraße 1, just beyond the Karlstor at Heidelberg-Altstadt S-Bahn station, about 300 m from the Neckarmünzplatz, with room for up to 12 coaches. It is often busy because castle combination tickets use it, and it cannot be reserved in advance.
  • Busparkplatz Bahnstadt: Speyerer Straße 20, with room for up to 35 coaches; places can be reserved in advance or booked at short notice. It is about 12 minutes' drive from the Neckarmünzplatz and near the SNP dome, with hotels within walking distance.
  • Busparkplatz Schloss (Elisabethenweg): at most 6 coaches up to 14.50 m long. Coaches may drive up to the castle only with a paid parking reservation, which also serves as the access permit; same-day or next-day bookings can be made by phone. Coaches may not drive up to the castle between 19:00 and 08:00; individual permits come from the city's Amt für Verkehrsmanagement. An optional combined ticket gives 90 minutes at the castle and 60 minutes at the Karlstor coach park.
  • Schloss Heidelberg says there is no direct access by vehicle to the castle address itself and recommends the Bergbahn. The castle coach park is about 0.5 km from the castle and is not public.
  • From 17 June 2026 until about the end of 2026 the Graimbergweg below the castle is closed for repairs; during the closure the Steigerweg and the Johannes-Hoops-Weg are open to lorry and bus traffic. Cars still reach the castle by the Neue Schloßstraße. Check the coach route to the castle coach park when booking.
  • Schwetzingen palace (Schloss Schwetzingen): five public, paid coach parking places on the Alter Messplatz, about 300 m from the palace; the palace is about a 10-minute walk from Schwetzingen station.
  • Speyer: coaches park in a separate area of the Festplatz (Geibstraße 2), south of the cathedral and less than 3 minutes' walk from the Dom; during the spring and autumn fairs and the Brezelfest the car park of the Technik-Museum is the alternative. Tickets are paid at machines or by mobile phone parking.
  • Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof: the main station, next to the Bahnstadt and the Heidelberg Congress Center, served by ICE, IC/EC and regional trains, with fast links to Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Karlsruhe and Mannheim; about 10 minutes from the Altstadt by tram or bus.
  • The Heidelberger Bergbahn (Kornmarkt - Schloss - Molkenkur - Königstuhl) will be closed from Monday 4 October 2027 to Friday 7 April 2028 for bridge repairs, with a replacement bus Kornmarkt - Schloss - Molkenkur.
  • Heidelberg Marketing names Flughafen Frankfurt as the nearest international airport, with the Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden and Stuttgart airports as alternatives; by train, Frankfurt Airport is about 60 minutes away with a change in Mannheim.
  • Day trips to Strasbourg enter the Eurométropole de Strasbourg low-emission zone (ZFE), which applies to coaches and to foreign vehicles: a French Crit'Air sticker is needed, and a German Umweltplakette does not replace it. Check the rules before travel.
  • Buses and coaches (Kraftomnibusse) are exempt from the German toll on motorways and federal roads, which applies only to goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes; the A5, A6 and A656 are therefore toll-free for coaches, minibuses and cars carrying passengers.
  • On German motorways a coach may drive at up to 100 km/h only if it is registered for that speed (entered in the registration certificate), has seat belts on all seats and a speed limiter set to 100 km/h; otherwise the limit is 80 km/h. The Sunday and public-holiday driving ban (StVO § 30) applies to lorries over 7.5 tonnes, not to coaches.
  • EU drivers' hours rules (Regulation (EC) No 561/2006) apply to coach drivers: at most 9 hours of driving a day (10 hours twice a week), a 45-minute break after 4.5 hours of driving and at least 11 hours of daily rest.

No sticker needed

Heidelberg lifted its low-emission zone on 1 March 2023. No sticker is needed and no diesel ban applies. A trip to Strasbourg is different: it needs a French Crit'Air sticker, which the German one does not replace.

Days out from Heidelberg

Schwetzingen palace is 35 minutes away, with coach places on the Alter Messplatz about 300 m from the gate. Speyer is 45 minutes: coaches use a separate area of the Festplatz, under three minutes' walk from the cathedral, and the Technik-Museum car park during the fairs. Worms takes 50 minutes and Kloster Maulbronn about 1 hour 15.

Questions organisers ask

Which airport should a group fly into?

Frankfurt. It is about 84 km away, around 1 hour 15 by coach in light traffic. Stuttgart is about 1 hour 45.

When should we book an old-town guide?

Early, especially for May to October. Groups arriving by coach meet their guide at the Tourist Information on the Neckarmünzplatz.

What if the group runs late for a museum?

Build in slack. The Kurpfälzisches Museum cancels a group tour when the group is more than 15 minutes late, and it is closed on Mondays.

How do we reach the Philosophenweg?

On foot. The steep Schlangenweg climbs to it from just above the Alte Brücke, across the river from the old town.
