Minibus Hire Across Germany

Freiburg Coach Hire and Black Forest Days

Freiburg is compact, its coach parks sit beside the pedestrian zone, and since 2025 no sticker is needed. Two things shape a group day: the size of walking groups in the old town and the mountain roads beyond it.

Arriving in the city

From the A5 take the exit Freiburg-Mitte and the B31a. Signs lead coaches to the Karlsplatz coach park, with 10 spaces, and the Schreiberanlage, with 3, both at the edge of the pedestrian zone. The group alights there. Three spaces do not go far, so plan on the Karlsplatz.

The low-emission zone is gone: Freiburg lifted it in spring 2025. On the B31 through town, though, a noise-protection limit of 30 km/h remains, which slows the drive towards the Höllental.

Groups of 25 in the old town

In the old town, walking groups should be no larger than 25, the tourist board asks: the lanes are narrow and the Bächle channels take up space. A full coach therefore splits into two or more groups, each with its own guide. Book the guides together and stagger the start times so the groups do not meet at the Münster.

Coach rules in Freiburg im Breisgau that change the plan

  • The nearest large airport is EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg (BSL), on French territory near Basel, about 74 km by road from the Münster (about 1 h). Stuttgart (STR) is about 206 km (about 2 h 5 min) and Zürich (ZRH), in Switzerland, about 159 km (about 1 h 50 min).
  • Trains arrive at Freiburg Hauptbahnhof, in the city centre a short walk from the Münsterplatz, with tram and bus connections.
  • Freiburg no longer has a low-emission zone: it was lifted in spring 2025 (the city says May 2025), so no green sticker is needed to drive in or through Freiburg. A 30 km/h limit for noise protection still applies on the B31 through the city.
  • Coach parking: signs lead coaches to the coach parks near the city centre at the Karlsplatz (10 spaces) and the Schreiberanlage (3 spaces), right next to the pedestrian zone, where passengers can get off. From the A5 take the exit Freiburg-Mitte and the B31a.
  • Group size in the old town: the tourist board asks travel groups to keep to a maximum of 25 people per group, because the narrow lanes and Bächle leave little room. Split a full coach into smaller groups with separate guides.
  • Black Forest roads: the B31 east through the Höllental and the roads to the Feldberg and Schauinsland are mountain roads. In ice or snow, German law requires winter tyres; for coaches at least on the permanently driven axles and the front steering axles.
  • Strasbourg (France) has a low-emission zone (ZFE) covering all 33 communes of the Eurométropole, which applies to coaches and to foreign vehicles: a French Crit'Air sticker is needed, and a German Umweltplakette does not replace it. Check the current rules before travel.
  • Basel (Switzerland): a coach or bus over 3.5 t registered outside Switzerland must pay the Swiss lump-sum heavy vehicle charge (PSVA) for each day it is in Switzerland, even when parked. It is paid in advance through the Swiss customs (BAZG) Via portal or app.

Black Forest roads

The B31 east through the Höllental and the climbs to the Feldberg or the Schauinsland all count as mountain roads. In ice or snow, German law requires winter tyres; on a coach, at least on the driven axles and the front steering axles. In winter, build slack into every timing.

Titisee is about 35 minutes away. Allow about 45 for either the Feldberg or the open-air museum at the Vogtsbauernhof, which opens seasonally. The Triberg waterfalls take about an hour. The Schauinsland cable car runs only in suitable weather, so keep a fallback plan.

Across the border

Two French cities are close: Colmar in about 50 minutes, Strasbourg in a little over an hour. For Strasbourg the coach needs a French Crit'Air sticker; a German one is not accepted in its place. Basel is about an hour away, and any non-Swiss coach above 3.5 t must pay Switzerland's lump-sum heavy vehicle charge (PSVA) in advance, per day in the country, even if it is only parked. Have the operator confirm both before you fix the route.

Europa-Park, the theme park at Rust, takes about half an hour, and Lake Constance at Konstanz about 1 h 45 min.

Questions organisers ask

Which airport do groups fly into?

EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg. It lies in France, close to Basel, some 74 km by road, about an hour. Stuttgart Airport is a two-hour drive, Zurich a little less.

Does the coach need a sticker for Freiburg?

No, not since the zone was dropped in 2025. For Strasbourg it needs a French Crit'Air sticker instead.

Can one guide take the whole coach?

Not in the old town. The tourist board asks for groups of no more than 25, so a full coach needs two or more guides.
