Regensburg Coach Hire: Stadtamhof, Parks and the Danube
In Regensburg the coach does not drive into the old town. It sets the group down at Stadtamhof, across the Danube, and everyone walks over the Steinerne Brücke.
The old town is a sticker zone
Since January 2018 the whole Altstadt, from the Alleengürtel ring down to the river, has been a low-emission zone. Driving or parking in it needs a green sticker, whether the coach is registered in Germany or abroad. Old-town hotels sit inside the zone, so a hotel drop there also needs the sticker.

Stadtamhof, then the bridge
The city's recommended stop is Stadtamhof, Am Protzenweiher, on the north bank. A coach is allowed 20 minutes there for boarding and setting down. The walk goes on across the twelfth-century bridge towards the Dom. For anyone with limited mobility, look at the walk before the day.
Building works have shut the Schwanenplatz stop, probably until around the end of 2026, and the Dultplatz no longer takes coaches. Older guides that mention either are out of date.

Coach rules in Regensburg that change the plan
- Flughafen München (MUC) is about 105 km by road from the Dom, about 1 h 10 min in light traffic; Flughafen Nürnberg (NUE) is about 111 km (about 1 h 15 min).
- Trains arrive at Regensburg Hauptbahnhof, on the south edge of the old town. Deutsche Bahn is renewing the busiest lines in full closures: Nürnberg–Regensburg was closed from 6 February to 10 July 2026, and the Obertraubling (Regensburg)–Passau line was planned for the second half of 2026. Check rail plans when combining coach and train.
- Regensburg has a low-emission zone (Umweltzone) covering the Altstadt between the Alleengürtel and the Danube, in force since 15 January 2018. Only vehicles with a green sticker may drive or park in it; this applies to visitors from Germany and abroad. Check before travel.
- Coach drop-off: the city recommends the coach stop "Stadtamhof" (Am Protzenweiher), where a coach may stand for 20 minutes to let passengers on or off; the group then walks into the old town over the Steinerne Brücke. The coach stop "Schwanenplatz" is closed because of building works, probably until December 2026.
- Coach parking: the free coach park "Bäckergasse", north of the Europakanal on the Frankenstraße, a few minutes' walk from the Stadtamhof stop (signposted from there), and the free coach park at the Donau-Arena in the east of the city. The Dultplatz is no longer a coach park.
- Walhalla, the Befreiungshalle and Weltenburg Abbey are all on the Danube within about 40 minutes of the city; Prague is cross-border context only.
Parking for the day
Two free coach parks serve the city. Bäckergasse is north of the Europakanal on the Frankenstraße, signposted from the Stadtamhof stop and only a short walk from it. The Donau-Arena car park is in the east of the city, near the motorway hotels. Agree which one the driver uses, and the time to be back at Stadtamhof.
Along the Danube
Three classic stops sit on the river within about 40 minutes. Count on about 25 minutes to Walhalla, the temple-style hall of fame above Donaustauf; about 35 to the Befreiungshalle on the Michelsberg over Kelheim; and about 40 to Weltenburg Abbey, where the river cuts through its gorge. All three fit into one day without strain.
Further out: Straubing (about 35 min), Landshut (about 55 min), Passau (about 1 h 20 min). By road, Nuremberg takes around 1 h 15 min and Munich 1 h 30 min. A Prague day, at nearly three hours each way, is better with an overnight.
Questions organisers ask
Which airports serve Regensburg?
Munich Airport, some 105 km off, takes around 1 h 10 min in light traffic. Nuremberg Airport is about 111 km, around 1 h 15 min.
How long can the coach stop at Stadtamhof?
Twenty minutes at most, long enough for boarding or getting off. It then parks at Bäckergasse or the Donau-Arena until pick-up.
Can we still use the Schwanenplatz stop?
Not while the building works last, which is probably until around the end of 2026. Use Stadtamhof instead.
