Coaches and cars for wedding guests
A German wedding often has two venues: the Standesamt for the legal part, then a church or a party location. Guests move between them, and the evening ends late.
Two ceremonies, several transfers
In Germany, a marriage is legally concluded only before a registrar (Standesbeamter). So many couples marry at the Standesamt and celebrate in a church or at a venue later, sometimes on another day. Write down every leg: hotel to Standesamt, Standesamt to church or venue, venue back to the hotels.
For a big party, one full-size coach or a midi-coach keeps everyone together. For a country venue, check that the access road and the car park take a coach. Narrow drives and gravel yards are common.

Castles, vineyards and the river
Some popular venues have coach limits. At Heidelberg Castle, coaches may drive up only with a booked parking place, and not between 19:00 and 08:00. An evening at the castle therefore needs a pick-up plan from below.
On the Rhine, no bridge crosses for about 90 km between Wiesbaden and Koblenz. A wedding on one bank with guests on the other means a ferry or a long detour, and a coach crossing by ferry is not something to count on. Check both banks before you choose the hotels.
Rules the organiser should know
- In Germany a marriage is legally concluded only before a registrar (Standesbeamter), so many weddings have a civil ceremony at the registry office and a separate church or venue celebration
- Guest transport in buses is carried out under a PBefG authorisation for occasional services (Gelegenheitsverkehr)
The couple's car and the late return
A car with driver for the couple is a Mietwagen. It is booked in advance and goes back to base after the job unless it already has the next booking. So book the second ride with the first, for example the late transfer from the party to the hotel.
Guest coaches run under a separate authorisation for occasional services. If the day starts at the Standesamt in the morning and ends after midnight, one driver will be out of hours. Give us both times and the operator plans the change.
Questions organisers ask
Can the couple's car wait during the ceremony?
Yes, when the waiting time is part of the booking. A Mietwagen works only on pre-booked jobs, so book the waiting and the onward ride together.
How many guests fit in each vehicle?
A full-size coach typically seats 49 to 57, a midi-coach 29 to 35 and a minibus 9 to 16. Exact layouts vary.
Do guests wear seat belts on the coach?
Yes, where fitted, formal dress or not.
