Minibus Hire Across Germany

Cologne Coach Hire for Group Trips

In Cologne the coach does not stop at the cathedral. Groups get off on Gereonstraße, a short walk away, and the coach parks free in Riehl until it is time to collect them.

One central stop

Gereonstraße, between Börsenplatz and Klingelpütz, is the central coach stop. A coach may stand there for 15 minutes at most, engine off. Coaches may no longer use Komödienstraße, and Breslauer Platz is for public transport only.

After setting down, the coach goes to the Buspark on Kuhweg in Riehl: free, open day and night, room for about 80 coaches, but not guarded. The riverside coach park at Konrad-Adenauer-Ufer is closed until further notice.

Green sticker almost everywhere

The Umweltzone covers about 137 km², nearly the whole city on both banks of the Rhine. Coaches and foreign vehicles need the green sticker like everyone else. There are no diesel bans. A decision to lift the zone may come, but nothing has been announced, so plan with the sticker.

Stadiums and arenas with coach access

  • RheinEnergieSTADION — 1. FC Köln football and concerts, in Müngersdorf in the west of the city, near the A1/A4 Kreuz Köln-West. Coach park P8 on Salzburger Weg; on match days coach parking can be booked in advance
  • LANXESS arena — Kölner Haie ice hockey, concerts and shows, in Deutz next to Köln Messe/Deutz station. Car park P5 (Gummersbacher Straße, next to Kölnarena 2) has no height limit and is used by minibuses and coaches; it is fully closed during all Kölner Haie games and partly or fully closed on many concert days

Coach rules in Cologne that change the plan

  • Flughafen Köln/Bonn (CGN) is about 16 km by road from the Kölner Dom, about 20 min in light traffic; Flughafen Düsseldorf (DUS) is about 60 km (about 1 h). Journeys take longer at peak times.
  • At Köln Bonn Airport the city lists a coach stop on Kennedystraße (51147 Köln), open 24 hours, with a stopping time of at most 20 minutes. The long-distance bus terminal is beside Terminal 2.
  • Köln has an Umweltzone (low-emission zone) of about 137 km² that covers almost all of the city: on the left bank the inner city up to the Militärring plus Müngersdorf, Junkersdorf, Lövenich, Weiden and Niehl; on the right bank Deutz, Mülheim, Kalk, Poll and the neighbouring districts. Only vehicles with a green sticker (Feinstaubplakette, emissions group 4) may enter; this also applies to coaches and to vehicles registered abroad. There is no general exemption for coaches; a permit for coach trips into the zone is possible only for vehicles registered to the holder before 1 January 2008 that cannot be retrofitted. There are no diesel driving bans in Köln. No end of the zone has been announced. These rules are current in October 2026; check them before travel.
  • The central coach stop for the city centre is Gereonstraße, between Börsenplatz and the crossing Gereonstraße / Klingelpütz / Mohrenstraße (navigation address Gereonstraße 16, 50670 Köln). A coach may stop there for at most 15 minutes to set down or pick up, with the engine switched off. Coaches may no longer stop at Komödienstraße, and the stops on Breslauer Platz are for public transport only.
  • After setting down, coaches park free of charge at the Buspark Köln, Kuhweg 20, 50735 Köln (Riehl, near the Mülheimer Brücke): about 80 coaches, open 24 hours, not guarded. Stadtbahn line 18 from the Slabystraße stop reaches the Hauptbahnhof in about 10 minutes.
  • Other coach parks: P5 Gummersbacher Straße in Deutz (privately run, paid). The city coach park Konrad-Adenauer-Ufer / An der Bastei (Konrad-Adenauer-Ufer 80) is closed until further notice because of building work at the Bastei.
  • Advent 2026 (Christmas markets): from 26 November to 23 December 2026 the Gereonstraße stop is closed. Coaches go instead to the Koelnmesse car park P22 in Deutz, where passengers get on and off; a space must be booked in advance through the Koelnmesse eSlot portal, spaces are limited and without a booking there is no entry when it is full. Entry 10:00-19:00, exit until 23:00. A free shuttle bus (line 199) runs 10:00-22:00 between P22 and Heumarkt (bus platform D). Expect the most visitors on Saturdays and on the shopping Sunday, 6 December 2026.
  • Kölner Dom: since 1 July 2026 tourist visits to the interior need a sightseeing ticket, also for every member of a guided group; large luggage and wheeled suitcases are not allowed inside.
  • Köln Hauptbahnhof: the main station, directly beside the Dom; ICE trains from Frankfurt, Berlin, Hamburg, München and Stuttgart, ICE trains from Brussels, and Eurostar trains from Paris and Brussels.
  • Köln Messe/Deutz: the station on the right bank next to the Koelnmesse and the LANXESS arena, one stop from the Hauptbahnhof across the Hohenzollernbrücke; some ICE trains stop here instead of at the Hauptbahnhof.
  • Mülheimer Brücke: the Rhine bridge has been under full renovation since 2018 with lane restrictions; the city expects to open it fully to traffic at the end of March 2028.
  • Zoobrücke: the city plans to strengthen the access ramps on both banks from the fourth quarter of 2026, for about 18 months. Through traffic should not be affected, but single lanes or ramps may be closed at times.
  • A1 Rheinbrücke Leverkusen (north of Köln): the first new bridge opened on 4 February 2024 and carries all traffic, including heavy vehicles; the second new bridge is planned to be finished at the end of 2027.
  • Buses and coaches (Kraftomnibusse) are exempt from the German toll on motorways and federal roads, which applies only to goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes; the Kölner Autobahnring (A1, A3, A4) and the A555 towards Bonn are therefore toll-free for coaches, minibuses and cars carrying passengers.
  • On German motorways a coach may drive at up to 100 km/h only if it is registered for that speed (entered in the registration certificate), has seat belts on all seats and a speed limiter set to 100 km/h; otherwise the limit is 80 km/h. The Sunday and public-holiday driving ban (StVO § 30) applies to lorries over 7.5 tonnes, not to coaches.
  • EU drivers' hours rules (Regulation (EC) No 561/2006) apply to coach drivers: at most 9 hours of driving a day (10 hours twice a week), a 45-minute break after 4.5 hours of driving and at least 11 hours of daily rest.

Visiting the cathedral with a group

Since 1 July 2026 a sightseeing ticket is charged for tourist visits inside the Dom. Every guided tour must use an authorised cathedral guide and be booked through the DOMFORUM at least 14 days ahead, for at most 20 people. Each member of the group also needs a ticket.

Wheeled suitcases and bags larger than 40 × 35 × 15 cm are refused and cannot be left at the Dom. On a travel day, keep luggage on the coach, and check where the coach will be before anyone walks off. Museum Ludwig, next door, is closed on Mondays and guides up to 20.

Advent and carnival

During Advent the Gereonstraße stop closes; in 2026 that is from 26 November to 23 December. Coaches then use the Koelnmesse car park P22 in Deutz, booked in advance through the eSlot portal, and a free shuttle runs to the Heumarkt. Saturdays are busiest. In carnival week the city closes roads in the centre, so check the year's plan before fixing times.

Where do coaches park for a LANXESS arena event?

Car park P5 on Gummersbacher Straße takes coaches, but it closes during every Kölner Haie game and on many concert days. Ask the operator to check the date.

Which day trips suit a coach?

Brühl and Bonn are about 40 minutes away, Aachen about 1 hour 15, Burg Eltz about 1 hour 45.
