Düsseldorf Airport coach transfers: registration, pick-up bays and the Altstadt

Düsseldorf runs a controlled system for coaches. Before collecting a group, the coach reports to a registration point and is given a time to drive in. That makes the flight details you send more important than at most airports.

How the pick-up works

The procedure applies to any bus longer than 6 m that has more than nine seats. First stop is the DUS-Bus point on Kieshecker Weg. There the driver reports five things: flight number, scheduled landing (plus any delay already known), number plate, seat count and the coach company's name. A coordinator answers with a drive-in time, and the coach then heads for pick-up bays 1 to 3 at the bus terminal.

For the organiser that means three jobs. Send the flight number, not just a time. Pass on delays the moment you hear of them. Keep the group together after baggage reclaim, because the coach reaches the bay on a set slot.

Arrivals level: no stopping

Stopping on the arrivals level is forbidden outright, and there is no coach park. Every bus stop is for getting on and off only. A coach that turns up early waits elsewhere until it is called in.

Departures are simpler. Coaches setting down have their own zone on the departures level for up to 30 minutes: the first 20 are free and the rest is charged. That is ample time to unload a full coach and its luggage.

Where the coach meets the group

  • Coaches collecting passengers (buses over 6 m long with more than 9 seats) first go to the coach registration point (DUS-Bus Anmeldung, on Kieshecker Weg): from the A44, exit 31 'Düsseldorf Flughafen', follow the signs towards Lichtenbroich, pass the registration point to the turning area at the railway station, then follow 'DUS-Bus' back to the registration point. There the driver gives the flight number, the scheduled landing time (and any known delay), the vehicle registration and number of seats, and the name of the coach company; the coordinator then gives the time to drive in. The coach then follows 'Ankunft/Arrivals' to the bus terminal, where the pick-up bays 'Pick up 1-3' are used. Coaches setting passengers down use the stopping zone for coaches and shuttle buses on the departures level, as signed. The airport publishes no separate waiting area for cars with driver; app-booked rides pick up at the 'Ride-App Pickup' at terminal exit B on the arrivals level. Arriving passengers can be met in the public area of the arrivals level.

Coach parking and waiting

  • There is no coach park: all bus stops are only for getting on and off, and parking is forbidden on all bays; bays 1-6 at the bus terminal are for scheduled buses. On the departures level, coaches may stop in their own zone for up to 30 minutes, the first 20 minutes free and charges after that. The departures and arrivals forecourts each have a 3.60 m wide entry and exit lane with a raised ticket machine for larger vehicles. The arrivals level has no stopping places at all (absolute no-stopping zone). The Kiss & Fly lane on the departures level is for cars: two passes per calendar day of up to 7 minutes each are free, with a maximum stay of 30 minutes and number-plate cameras at the barriers; coaches have their own area.

By road to the city centre

  • about 9 km by road to the Burgplatz, in the Altstadt of Düsseldorf, about 15 min in light traffic; longer at peak times

One building, three concourses

All flights use one building with three concourses, A, B and C, so a group on two flights still meets in one public arrivals area. Send both flight numbers and plan the pick-up around the later one.

Altstadt, Messe and Köln

Allow about 15 minutes for the 9 km to the Burgplatz in the Altstadt when traffic is light. Much of the city lies inside an Umweltzone, where a green sticker is compulsory for German and foreign coaches alike. Köln, 60 km away, takes 45 to 50 minutes, so Düsseldorf also works for groups bound for the cathedral city.

Since September 2026 the U80 and U81 light-rail lines stop beneath the terminal, about 15 minutes from the Altstadt and 7 from the Messe. The airport also has its own long-distance station, with trains up to ICE; the SkyTrain shuttles between station and terminal in about 7 minutes. Check the current rail service before you send a group by train.

Questions organisers ask

Who handles the registration?

The coach driver, at the registration point. Your part is sending correct flight details in advance and bringing the group to the bay.

What if our flight lands two hours late?

The coach is called in against the real landing time, so the driver needs the update. Keep the group leader reachable by phone.

Can the coach wait outside arrivals?

No. Nothing may stop on the arrivals level. The coach drives in only when the coordinator gives it a time.
