Coaches for the Cologne Carnival

Cologne's street carnival starts at Weiberfastnacht, 4 February 2027, and ends on Ash Wednesday, 10 February. Rosenmontag, the big parade day, falls on 8 February. Crowds fill the centre all week, and a coach plan has to work around them.

The dates that matter

The session begins at the Heumarkt on 11 November 2026, with the traditional opening from 09:00. The street carnival follows in February. Thursday 4 February is Weiberfastnacht; Sunday 7 February brings the Schull- un Veedelszöch; Monday 8 February 2027 is the Rosenmontagszug.

The parade starts in the Südstadt, at Chlodwigplatz and Severinstraße, and runs through the city centre.

Closed roads and changed trams

On Rosenmontag the city closes the parade route to traffic early in the morning and reopens it in stages after street cleaning. KVB trams in the centre are split or rerouted on several lines. The details change every year, so the 2027 plan is checked before times are fixed.

A coach should not count on crossing the centre on parade day. Set down on the group's side of the route, and pick up well away from it.

Where coaches stop in Cologne

The central coach stop is Gereonstraße: at most 15 minutes, engine off, to set down or pick up. Coaches then park at the Buspark Köln on Kuhweg in Riehl, which holds about 80 coaches; tram 18 from Slabystraße reaches the Hauptbahnhof in about 10 minutes. On a carnival day the closures decide whether these points work, and the operator confirms.

Cologne's Umweltzone covers almost the whole city. Coaches need the green sticker, foreign ones included. There are no diesel bans.

Stands, glass and accessibility

The Festkomitee Kölner Karneval sells seats on stands beside the route, among them the Hohenzollernring, the Heumarkt and the Burgmauer. For the inclusion stand on the Hohenzollernring, bookings go through the LVR. A strict glass ban applies; tell the group before they board.

Questions organisers ask

Can the coach drop us at the cathedral?

No. Coaches do not set down at the Dom. The central stop is Gereonstraße, and on parade days the closures may move even that.

How far is the airport?

Köln/Bonn airport is about 16 km from the cathedral area, around 20 minutes in light traffic. Allow more on carnival days.

Is the November opening worth a coach trip?

It can be. The opening starts at 09:00 on the Heumarkt, so arrive early, set down at the coach stop and walk in.
